Norm is an accountant
Norm has always liked electronic gadgets,
Norm is always looking for ways to make his professional practice more effective, efficient, productive and profitable.
A while back Norm was explaining to me how his new internet access and e-mail was enabling him to make his time so much more efficient and provide information to his clients so much faster.
Now in Canada, it is tradition that all of the major tax changes are introduced in the Federal Budget, and it is tradition for accountants to burn the midnight oil preparing a Budget Analysis that they can have on their clients' desk first thing in the morning with a summary of all of the new tax changes.
Norm decided that he could deliver this Budget Analysis to his clients even faster by sending it by e-mail. But Norm didn't want to tie up his computer while everyone was busy in the office working on the analysis, so he set up his mailer to send it on a delay 5 minutes after the commentary was complete.
The Budget Analysis was a fairly long e-mail (about 20K) and off it went. But Norm's e-mail programme had a glitch. It seems that it wasn't recognizing that it had sent the e-mail and it kept trying to resend it every 5 minutes.
The result was that by 8 a.m. all of Norm's clients had received 144 Budget Analyses totalling 2.8 megaabytes in each of their mailboxes.
